RM2D2XBYT–Rock formations on the Planet Mars with what appears to be a human face (top centre) peering out from the surface. The face, first spotted in July 1976 in pictures from the Viking 1 orbiter, is claimed by some to be evidence of an ancient Martian civilisation. The Mars Global Surveyor, due for launch next month, will obtain pictures of the face far more detailed than any obtained before. See PA Story SCIENCE Mars. AVAILABLE IN B/W ONLY.

RME11AAE–Jun. 06, 1976 - The face of Mars at 425,000 miles from Planet: NASA released this picture of MARS taken 425,000 miles from the planet by the Viking l spacecraft. The spacecraft is expected to make a soft landing on the surface of Mars on July 4th in time for America's Bicentennial. In the picture North is toward the upper right and South is in the dark areas to the lower left. It is looking at the morning side of the planet as it rotates left to right. The flight took place on May 31, 2016, in the 25-foot-wide, 85-foot-tall (8-meter-by-26-meter) Space Simulator Facility at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California. The flight was the first demonstration that powered-controlled flight could be successfully executed in Mars-like conditions. The simulator's vacuum chamber allows engineers to test spacecraft and components in conditions like those they would face on Mars.

RM2WXE5EB–The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) captured this bit of ursine pareidolia on 12 December 2022. While it resembles a bear we might see on Earth, this is actually a hill on Mars with a peculiar shape. A V-shaped collapse structure makes the nose, two craters form the eyes, and a circular fracture pattern shapes the head. The circular fracture pattern might be due to the settling of a deposit over a buried impact crater. An optimised and enhanced version of NASA imagery. Credit: NASA/JPL/UArizona
RMGE4FP6–ully landforms proposed to have been caused by geologically-recent seepage and runoff of liquid water on Mars are found in the most unlikely places. They typically occur in areas that are quite cold, well below freezing all year round. Like the old adage about moss on trees, nearly all of them form on slopes that face away from sunlight. Most of the gullies occur at latitudes between 30 and 70. The highest latitude at which martian gullies have been found is around 70-75 S on the walls of pits developed in the south polar pitted plains. If you were at this same latitude on Earth, you would be

RMPB5THF–Bellona. Artist: Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn) (Dutch, Leiden 1606-1669 Amsterdam). Dimensions: 50 x 38 3/8 in. (127 x 97.5 cm). Date: 1633. Rembrandt's sober and powerful depiction of Bellona, the Roman goddess of war, was perhaps intended to suggest the new Dutch Republic's readiness to repel foreign forces. Images of Mars and his sister Bellona occasionally decorated the headquarters of civic guard companies. The shield, with its frightful face of Medusa, was added at a late stage of work, probably in response to seeing a version of Rubens's well-known painting of a severed Medusa's head.
