Checkered Garter Snake (Thamnophis marcianus marcianus). Sloughing. Using a hollow tree branch bark to remove current epidermal layer and reveaing a sparkling new clean one, and allowing for more growth. Shed slough pealed off, inside out, rather like a man pealing off a sock.
