the complete set of thirty-six woodblock prints, including contents page, from the series New Forms of Thirty-six Ghosts (Shinkei sanjurokkaisen), mounted as an album bound in accordion style, each print signed Yoshitoshi and variously sealed Yoshitoshi and Taiso, published by Matsuki Heikichi in 1902, many prints embellished with metallic pigments, embossing and burnishing


Each vertical oban: each sheet approx. 35.4 x 23.7 cm., 14 x 9⅜ in.

The album: 35.5 x 24.3 x 2.4 cm., 14 x 9½ x ⅞ in.

The final series in Yoshitoshi’s oeuvre, New Forms of Thirty-six Ghosts (Shinkei sanjurokkaisen) was originally published by Sasaki Toyokichi between 1889 and 1892. This complete set is from the edition by Matsuki Heikichi in 1902, issued exactly ten years after Yoshitoshi’s death.


The collection of eerie designs takes inspiration from a long tradition of ghost tales in Japanese literature and drama.
