African Butterfly Cichlid (Anomalochromis thomasi)
Description
Description
African Butterfly Cichlid (Anomalochromis thomasi):
-
Overview:
- The African Butterfly Cichlid, also known as the “Sierra Leone Butterfly Cichlid,” is a small riverine cichlid native to the heavily vegetated forest streams of Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Liberia in Western Africa.
- These freshwater gems prefer living in slightly acidic, oxygen-rich streams with abundant overhanging vegetation.
- Their streamlined bodies and striking coloration make them a delightful addition to aquariums.
-
Appearance:
- The African Butterfly Cichlid typically exhibits a bright yellow-orange body adorned with bold black stripes or spots, reminiscent of a tiger’s pattern.
- Adults can reach a size of 4-5 inches and live up to 8-10 years in captivity.
-
Habitat and Care:
- In their natural habitat, these cichlids inhabit forest streams characterized by large amounts of overhanging vegetation.
- For aquarium care:
- Tank size: A tank with base dimensions of 80 cm x 30 cm is adequate for a small group.
- Decor: Provide flat rocks as spawning surfaces and plenty of hiding places. Clay pot caves, roots, and driftwood can be used. Plants are appreciated but not essential.
- Water conditions:
- Temperature: 23 – 27 °C
- pH: 5.5 – 7.5
- Hardness: 18 – 268 ppm
- Diet: They are unfussy eaters and accept most foods. A varied diet of cichlid pellets, live, and frozen foods is recommended.
- Behavior: Very peaceful for a cichlid, but territorial during spawning. Best kept with compatible tankmates like small characins, other African dwarf cichlids, and Corydoras spp.
- Reproduction: Easy. They are substrate spawners and can breed in slightly acidic or slightly alkaline conditions. Pair formation is obvious, and they defend their territory when ready to spawn.
-
Breeding Tip:
- To obtain a pair, start with a group of 6 or more young fish and allow pairs to form naturally.
- Condition them on a high-quality diet of frozen and live foods.
