A FrontHill Country<br />

B High Dissected Hill Country<br />

4. Lower Dome Burn<br />

Lower Dome Burnbeech forest: This description is for the beech forest on the terrace above the Dome<br />

Burn at c. 280m (GR NZMS 260 F44 810 967). The forest canopy is dominatedbymountainbeech<br />

(Nothofagus solandri var. cliffortioides), with occasionalred beech (N. fusca) and silver beech (N.<br />

menziesi.). The understory includes seedling/sapling mountain and silver beech, Coprosma colensoi<br />

and C. rhamnoides, with occasional peppertree, marbleleafand weeping mapou. The ground cover<br />

includes bryophytes, prickly shield fern (Polystiehum vestitum) and patches ofwater fem.<br />

Depleted tussocldand on northernridge: This site is inside the fence at the north ends ofthe block at c.<br />

900m(GR NZMS 260 F43 795 040). This site is dominated byexotic grasses (browntop and sweet<br />

vernal), with only modest fescue (5%) and narrow-leaved snow tussock cover. The area retains a range<br />

ofother native species includingDraeophyllum uniflorum,Gaultheria crassa, comb sedge (Oreobolus<br />

peetinatus) , Coprosma perpusilla, Leucopogonfrasen: Pentachondrapumila, sky lily(Herpolirion<br />

novae-zelandiae), Gonocarpus mieranthus, Raoulia subulata, Ranuneulus multiscapus and other<br />

species.<br />

Wetland on upper slopes: This wetland is dominated by comb sedge (40%), Schoenus pauciflorus<br />

(8%), bryophytes (6%), Gaultheria crassa (5%), Gonocarpus micranthus (5%), narrow-leaved snow<br />

tussock (Chionoc1oa rigida) (3%), cottonwood (Ozotliamnus vauvilliersii, ·3%), Coprosma perpusilla<br />

(3%), Bulbinella angusti/olia (2%), Carpha alpina (2%), manuka (Leptospermum scoparium, 1%),<br />

Leucopogonfraseri (1%), Celmisia sp. "gracilenta rhiZomatous" (1%), Hebe anomala. Draeophyllum<br />

uniflorum, Pentaehondra pumila, Oreobolus strictus, sky lily, Juneus antarcticus, Plantago uniflora.<br />

Locally inaka (Dracophyllum longifolium) is up to 10% cover.<br />

Schoenus flush: This communityis dominated by Sehoenus pauciflorus, withbryoph}rtes, Bulbinella<br />

angusti/olia, Gonocarpus micranthus, Juncus antarcticus, Plantago uniflora, Pratia angulata,<br />

Gnaphalium polylepis, Carex capillacea, Microtus oliganthus, Viola cunninghamii and other species.<br />

Rocky pavement: This community was fmmd along the sununitridge at c. 870m (GR NZMS 260 F43<br />

787033). The cover is dominated by gravel and soil (50%) and the bryophyte Racomitrum<br />

languinosum (20%). Other components include comb sedge (6%), Leucopogon fraseri (5%), fescue<br />

tussock (Festuca novae-zelandiae, 5%), Dracophyllum uniflorum (4%), narrow-leayed snow<br />

tussockland (3%), exotic grasses (2%), snowberry (Gaultheria depressa var. novae-zelandiae, 2%),<br />

Raoulia glabra (1%), Anisotome aromatiea (1%), and Helichrysumfilieaule.<br />

Steep, rocky ridge: This community was found along the summit ridge at c. 880m (GR NZMS 260 F43<br />

782 026). The cover is dominated by rockand bare ground (25%), with muchRacomitrum<br />

languinosum (12%), Gaultheria crassa (10%), fescue tussock (8%), narrow-leaved snow tussock (5%),<br />

Gaultheria macrostigma (5%), Raouliasubsericea (5%), leaflitter (5%), Leucopogonjraseri (3%),<br />

catsear (3%), Pentachondra pumila (2%), Celmisia densiflora (2%), exotic grasses (2%), snow berry<br />

(1 %), Gonocarpus mantanus (1%), blue tussock, Ranunculus multiscapus, Sclenanthus uniflorus, S.<br />

brockei, Anisotome aromatiea and other species. In addition there are a variety ofshrubs including<br />

Coprosma sp. afT. parviflora, inaka, Draeophyllum uniflorum, tutu (Coriaria sarmentQsa), Hebe<br />

anomala, manuka, these in combination total 3% cover).<br />

Narrow-leaved snow tussockland on shady face: This sites is located on a shadyface at c. 920m(GR<br />

NZMS 260 F43 781 023). The communityis composed ofRacomitrum languinosum (5-40%, average<br />

20%), Gaultheria erassa (15%), narrow-leaved snow tussockland (8%), Celmisia densiflora (3%),<br />

catsear(3%), lichen (3%), rocklbare (3%), fescue tussock (2%), Bulbinella angusti/olia (2%), Raoulia<br />

subsericea (2%), Celmisia gracilenta (2%), comb sedge (2%), otherbryphytes (2%), exotic grasses<br />

(2%), Leucopogonfraseri (I%), Pentachondra pumila (1%), Coprosma perpusilla (1%), Lycopodium<br />

Above the snow line fence a site examined was dominated by tall (1+m tall) red tussock (20-40%) and<br />

Carex coriacea (15-50%), with occasional red x snow tussock hybrids, Craspedia sp. (5%),<br />

Oreomyrrhis ramosa (2%), Bulbinella angustifolia, Dolychoglottis !yallii, Schoenus paucij/orus, Carex<br />

gaudichaudiana, bryophytes and a range ofherb species. This community has open, turfy areas within<br />

it that are dominated by a rich diversity ofherbaceous species with only 10% red tussock cover. These<br />

include Celmisia sp. "gracilenta rhizomatous", Craspedia sp., Plantago unij/ora, Viola cunninghamii,<br />

Hydrocotyle novae-zelandiae var. montana and Pratia angulata, along with Carpha alpina, Schoenus<br />

paucij/orus, Carex gaudichaudiana and other species.<br />

A second site contained..shorter statured (50cm) red tussockland (8-25% cover), Celmisia sp.<br />

"gracilenta rhizomatous" (5-75%), Oreobolus strictus (10-35%), with comb sedge, blue tussock,<br />

Pimelea oreophila, Coprosma cheesemanii, Gaultheria macrostigma, Pentachondra pumila and other<br />

species.<br />

Locally there is a red tussock-sphagnum moss community with cutty grass, Oreobolus strictus,<br />

Gaultheria depressa and Carex gaudichaudiana.<br />

At a lower altitude (c. 980m, GRNZMS260 F43 912 112) before the slope changes significantly, the<br />

low extent ofred tussockland was sampled. In this area red tussock, cutty grass, Bulbinella<br />

angustijolia. Schoenus paucij/orus and Do!ychoglottis Iyallii comprise most ofthe vegetation cover (c.<br />

90%). Within this red tussockland is a mosaic ofopen seepage vegetation. These seepages contain<br />

much exotic grass (5-25%-, red tussock (10%), Viola cunninghamii (10%), PriItia angulata (6%), cutty<br />

grass (5%), Schoenus pauciflorus (5%) and Rytidosperma buchananii (5%). Also present are Carex<br />

sinclairii (2%), Bulbinella angustifolia (2%), Do!ychoglottis /yallii (2%), Celmisia sp. "gracilenta<br />

rhizomatous" (2%), Uncinia divaricata (2%), Oxalis magellanica, little hard fern, Anaphaloides<br />

bellidioides. Anemone tenuicaulis, Microseris scapigera, catsear, Crepis capillaris and other species.<br />

Grassland on lower ridge: This community is located on the steeperlower ridge. This grassland is<br />

dominated by exotic grasses (80-90% cover), with narrow-leaved snow tussock (3-5%), fescue tussock<br />

(2-5%), rock(I-2%),white clover, catsear, Acaena caesiglauca, Wahlenbergia albomarginata, blue<br />

tussock, Anisotome aromatiea var.j1abellifolia, Bulbinella angustijOlia. Viola cunninghamii,<br />

Gaultheria depressavar. novae-zelandiae, Anaphaloides bellidioides. Celmia gracilenta, Ranunculus<br />

multiscapus. Helichrysum filicaule" Uncinia rubra, Lycopodiumjastigiatum, Gentiana grisebachii,<br />

Raoulia subsericea, Leucopogonfraserii and other species.<br />

Rock outcrops: These serve as refuge sites for a number ofspecies including prickly shield fern,<br />

Brachyglottis southlandicus, mountain flax, Coprosma ciliata, C. sp. aff. parvij/ora, C. rugosa, inaka,<br />

manuka, silver beech, marbleleaf, broadleaf, Olearia arborescens, O. ilicifolia, 0. bullata, Hebe<br />

raldaensis, Carolda cotoneaster, , false beech (Gaultheria antipoda) and southernrata (Metrosideros<br />

umbel/ata).<br />

Regenerating forest: In places there is a regenerating forest emerging through either manuka or<br />

coprosma dominated shrubland. There more advanced regenerating forest contains much black mapou,<br />

marble1eafandbroadleafwith occasional silver beech, Haals totara, three fmger (Pseudopanax<br />

colensoi var. ternatus), kowhai, lancewood and Raukawa simplex.<br />

13. Station Ridge<br />

Western Plateau<br />

A North ofPatersons Ridge/Gow tributary<br />

Narrow-leaved snow tussockland: This community is dominated by moderate statured (c. 50cmtall),<br />

good conditionnarrow-leaved snow tussock (40% cover). Other major components ofthe community<br />

are Celmisia lyallii (2-25%, average 20%), leaflitter, blue tussock (5+%) and Epilobium alsinoides.<br />

Wetland: The wetlandwas very diverse containing comb sedge, Schoenus paucij/orus, Carpha alpina,<br />

Gnaphalium lateral, Euphrasia dyerii. Drosera arcturii, Celmisia aff. alpina, Gentiana amabilis,<br />

Kelleria pallidosa, Carex echinata, Utricularia monanthos, Psycophila obtusa, Isolepis aucklandicus,<br />

Abrotanella ceaspitosa, Phyllachne colensoi, Centrolepis pallida, Juncus antarcticus Luzula leptophila<br />

and other species.<br />
