“Libraries are not made; they grow.”

The University of Wisconsin–Madison 

library began with 600 books in the mid- 

1800s. This past year, the UW–Madison, now 

with more than 45 libraries, has acquired its six 

millionth book, shown on the cover. As 

Libraries Director Ken Frazier observes, “This is 

a milestone. There are not many public 

university libraries that get to that number.” 

That growth is due in part to the donors and 

private collectors who have helped nurture the 

collections. The Friends of the UW–Madison 

Libraries play an important part in that effort. 

We have much to celebrate: 

■ special gifts from generous donors; 

■ successful book sales; 

■ outstanding presentations at our monthly 

programs; 

■ a substantial growth in membership; 

■ grants to member libraries to fund special 

needs; 

■ grants to visiting scholars from around the 

country; and 

■ an active board, which has welcomed two 

new members — Eleanor Albert and Georgia 

Wiley. 

Major gifts from Friends members Jack Fry 

and David Hayman helped to acknowledge the 

acquisition of the six millionth book. Their gifts, 

described in this issue, were accompanied by 

appropriate fanfare in the local media. 

Although the six millionth book will be 

housed in Special Collections, more than three 

dozen libraries on campus represent equally 

important caretakers of knowledge. In visits to 

some of these libraries —Geography, 

Chemistry, Business, Biology, Art, the School 

of Library and Information Studies, and 

Geology — I have been impressed by the 

librarians’ combination of subject expertise and 

technological savvy. We will feature some of 

these libraries in future issues of this magazine. 

One could discuss with computer enthusiasts 

the future of the printed book. I 

admit that I am a prejudiced 

commentator on this subject, 

but I am convinced that books are our history. 

Our personal collections of books reflect who 

we are — can a machine do that? Ironically, one 

often must read a book or manual (as I have 

found out just these past months) to use the 

machine that will bring a digital book to the 

screen. I realize, of course, the importance of the 

computer and know that many more of us will 

be able to read books using a computer, but to 

feel a book in one’s hand gives it life. And in 

this wonderful library system, you can have it 

both ways. 

In fact, through the support of the Friends 

board, a recent grant supported a pilot project 

with hand-held electronic books. This is one 

example of a hard-working, dedicated board 

that has the ability to envision new 

possibilities for books. Each member of the 

board brings a special talent along with a spirit 

of cooperation, which I have very much 

appreciated as president. 

One member deserves a special thank you— 

John Toussaint, who has managed our very 

successful book sales. 

Especially important to the Friends is the 

interest and support we have received from 

Director Ken Frazier, from Robin Rider of 

Special Collections, from Don Johnson who 

edits Libraries, and from John Tortorice who 

does everything else. 

It is through these cooperative efforts that 

“UW–Madison libraries are made to grow.”

Like good jazz, poetry should be experienced, says Robert Pinsky, the nation’s poet laureate 

from 1997 to 2000. It is also an ancient means of storing memory. “Being a poet, you represent 

the organ of memory of the people,” Pinsky says.

Emeritus Professor of Physics Jack Fry recently gave the libraries more than 26,000 documents 

on Italian history. According to Fry, these documents represent bits of micro history, and they 

have made the last forty years searching the shops of Italy all worthwhile.

It was serendipity that introduced David Hayman, an internationally recognized James Joyce 

scholar, and Robert Motherwell, the famous abstract expressionist artist, to Ulysses. Both had 

made “virgin readings” of Joyce and were profoundly influenced.

The centerpiece in the Friends spring lectures series is one of the country’s largest collections of 

artists’ books. Artists’ Books: Highlights from the Kohler Art Library—a four-part exhibit in four 

locations at the UW–Madison—will be on display through March 15.

Artists’ Books is focus of Friends spring lecture series 

A MacArthur “genius grant” winner and the curator 

of the acclaimed exhibit “Van Gogh and Gauguin: 

The Studio of the South” at the Art Institute of 

Chicago are among the speakers in the spring 

lecture series sponsored by the Friends of the UW- 

Madison Libraries. 

A multiple-location exhibit on campus — “Artists’ 

Books: Highlights from the Kohler Art Library” — is 

the centerpiece for the lecture series. (See page 12). 

The lectures cover the creation of artists’ books, 

scholarship, and collecting, and include a gallery 

talk with examples from the collection to handle. 

The opening lecture, “Some Readings,” was given 

by Buzz Spector, art professor and departmental 

chair at Cornell University.

In “Sandboxes” William C. Bunce, former director of 

the Kohler Art Library at UW-Madison, will discuss 

the origin of the collection in the 1970s and cover 

the deep relationships he developed over the years 

with these books and many of their makers. Cocurators 

of the exhibit, Lyn Korenic, current director 

of the Kohler Art Library, and Tracy Honn, director 

of the Silver Buckle Press, will be on hand to give a 

tour of the exhibit and show examples of artists’ 

books to explore.

“Form Follows Content: Books of Unusual Format 

from the Janus Press” will be presented by Claire 

Van Vliet proprietor of the Janus Press, which has 

produced more than 100 titles since its formation in 

1955. Van Vliet introduced book arts to UW– 

Madison printmaking students when she was a 

visiting artist in the mid-1960s. Internationally 

recognized for her work, in 1989 she won a

prestigious MacArthur Fellowship, popularly known 

as a “genius grant.”

5:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 16, Howard Auditorium, 

Fluno Center, 601 University Avenue 

Douglas W. Druick, curator of the highly acclaimed 

“Van Gogh and Gauguin: The Studio of the South” 

at the Art Institute of Chicago, will give the Friends 

annual lecture. He is the Searle Curator of European 

Painting and Prince Trust Curator of Prints and 

Drawing at the Art Institute. It is the first show 

devoted to the nine weeks artists Vincent Van Gogh 

and Paul Gauguin spent together in southern France 

in fall 1888, which was a crucial period in the 

development of both painters.

The four exhibits will be on display through 

March 15 in: Department of Special Collections,

The next major exhibit in Special Collections is 

“‘Very Cheap and Pretty Frequent’ Eighteenth- and 

Nineteenth-Century British Periodicals,” which runs 

March 20 through May 24.

David Crosby Collection added to Mills Music Library 

The library of the late Madison maestro and UW 

alumnus David Crosby has been given to the Mills 

Music Library by his wife, Kristin Martin. 

Thousands of musical scores, recordings, books, 

original compositions, and arrangements were 

donated in several installments. 

“Creating music was David’s contribution in life. It 

would mean a lot to him that his legacy—his music 

and collection—has a place for it to be passed on,” 

says Martin. 

Crosby was the artistic director and conductor of 

the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra since 1970, 

when it was called the Summer Orchestra. Two 

years later, he was named musical director of the 

Madison Civic Repertory and conductor of the 

Madison Festival Choir. He initiated and for fifteen 

seasons directed the enormously popular summer 

Concerts on the Square attended by thousands of 

people who saw the concerts as an integral facet of 

Madison life. Crosby died in July 1998 on the 

afternoon of the season’s final concert. 

Crosby began his musical study as a choir boy at 

the Choir School of St. John the Divine in New York 

City. He wrote his first opera while in high school

and went on to receive a bachelor’s degree in organ 

from Oberlin Conservatory. He also played banjo, 

dulcimer, and guitar. 

He came to Madison in 1969 to study conducting 

with Otto Mueller at the UW–Madison, where he 

received his master’s degree in conducting in the 

early 1970s. A less well-known aspect of his 

musical life was his involvement as director of the 

Moravian Music Festival choir. Many of his original 

compositions were written for and performed by the 

choir. 

“All of his musical interests and activities are 

reflected in his library,” says Geri Laudati, head of 

the Mills Music Library. “This is one of the most 

significant gifts Mills has ever received.” 

In addition to the published materials, the 

collection contains manuscripts and recordings of 

Crosby’s own compositions. The performance 

material also includes his annotations and 

performance directions. 

Staff are organizing and cataloging the collection 

for public use.

In press, off the presses, and online 

UW–Madison Libraries are exploring 

new publishing models that combine 

electronic and print-on-demand. 

Collaboration with the UW Press 

recently produced two facsimile books 

by noted scholars in Wisconsin’s 

history—Antiquities of Wisconsin (1855) 

by Increase Lapham and The Experimental 

College (1932) by Alexander Meiklejohn. 

In addition to the print editions, searchable digital 

versions of these books have been published by the 

libraries at: < http://www.library.wisc.edu/etext/ 

Antiquities/> and . Hundreds of libraries have added the 

e-text to their catalogs, and the electronic versions 

Endowment for the Book Created 

A $10,000 leadership gift from University Libraries 

Director Ken Frazier has created the Endowment for 

the Book through the UW Foundation. 

Frazier notes that the gift “will help us continue 

celebrating books for a long time to come.” The gift 

follows on the heels of the Friends campaign to 

recognize the acquisition of the UW-Madison’s six 

millionth volume and to renew interest in books. 

Vatican Registers come to Madison 

For hundreds of years, the only way of using 

documents from the Vatican archives was by going 

to the Vatican and viewing the material firsthand. 

Now seventy-two volumes of fourteenth-century 

papal letters are available through the UW–Madison 

Libraries. 

When the Vatican announced the registers would 

be available on CD-ROM, UW-Madison Hilldale 

Professor William J. Courtenay offered to donate 

$2,000 toward their purchase as a challenge grant 

to the Friends. The Friends matched the gift and 

agreed this spring to a second challenge grant. 

The collection provides a valuable resource to 

students and scholars of the medieval to early 

modern period, art history, and paleography. 

According to Courtenay, who is the chair of the 

UW-Madison’s Classics Department, the registers are

appear to be increasing the demand for the print 

editions. 

Coming this spring from the libraries’ imprint, 

Parallel Press, are two additional print-on-demand 

titles, which are currently online. The James Joyce 

Scholars’ Collection at has produced an 

unprecedented demand for copies of the out-ofprint 

First Draft Version of Finnegans Wake by David 

Hayman, Evjue-Bascom Professor Emeritus of 

Comparative Literature at the UW–Madison. Also in 

press is T. H. White’s Bestiary: A Book of Beasts, 

which was the first and only English translation of a 

medieval bestiary. Its online parallel is at . 

The income from the endowment will purchase 

books, manuscripts and other scholarly research in 

all formats that support teaching and research at the 

University of Wisconsin–Madison. 

Gifts to the fund may be made to UW Foundation 

– Endowment for the Book; a reply card for making 

contributions to the endowment is included in this 

issue of Libraries. 

“the richest archival treasure for the history of the 

period that exists.” 

The CD-ROM versions of the registers are 

available in the Reference Department of Memorial 

Library. They contain works from the papacy of 

Johannes XXII (1316-1334) and of Benedictus XII 

(1334-1342). The periods cover the crusades and 

the Catholic Church’s dominance in government, 

art, and religion. 

“This is one of the most exciting developments for 

all humanities scholars interested in this time 

period,” says Barbara Walden, senior academic 

librarian and European Studies bibliographer in 

Memorial Library. “It opens a whole world to 

medievalists that they did not have.”

In passing 

Mary Lydon, a longtime member of the board of the 

Friends of the UW–Madison Libraries, died last 

year. She had just been named professor of French 

emerita. 

Lydon was a specialist in twentieth-century 

literature. Her teaching and writing ranged from the 

French novel and psychoanalysis to feminism and 

post-structuralist theory. 

A statement from the Department of French and 

Italian notes, “Lydon has had a major influence on 

the intellectual life of our department as a brilliant 

scholar of international reputation as well as an 

inspiring and innovative teacher.” 

Always expressive and enthusiastic, Lydon was 

eager to help students improve their writing skills 

with innovative approaches. She was one of the first 

in her academic department to experiment with 

intensive writing courses and to use electronic mail 

in her teaching. 

Lydon was born in Stranorlar, County Donegal, 

Ireland. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s 

degrees from the National University of Ireland and 

her doctorate from the University of Alberta. She 

began teaching in the University of Wisconsin 

System in 1974 and came to the UW–Madison in 

1983 as an assistant professor. She was promoted to 

associate with tenure in 1986 and to professor in 

1989. 

In addition to many academic honors and awards 

from the university, Lydon received a National 

Jazz in the library 

A gift to the Mills Music Library has created the 

Bunny Berigan Collection. The daughter of the late 

Bunny Berigan, Joyce Berigan Hansen, and her 

husband, Ken Hansen, of Milwaukee 

recently donated 250 original 78-rpm 

recordings of Berigan’s performances. 

Berigan, a well-known jazz trumpeter 

who came to prominence in the 1930s, 

is most often associated with the 1937 

jazz tune “I Can’t Get Started.” Berigan was 

a member of notable bands such as those 

led by Hal Kemp, Paul Whiteman, Benny 

Goodman, and the Dorsey Brothers. He was born 

Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship for 

University Teachers in 1998-99 and a Pickard- 

Bascom Professorship in 2000. 

She wrote two books: Perpetuum mobile: a study 

of the novels and aesthetics of Michel Butor (1980), 

and Skirting the issue: essays in literary theory 

(1995). She also wrote twenty-five articles, eight 

book chapters, seven translations, and seven book 

reviews. She delivered more than seventy papers in 

the United States and Europe. 

Lydon was completing a book project on Samuel 

Beckett, Idiom and medium: Beckett’s bilingual 

oeuvre in the context of his Irish identity as well as a 

translation of French philosopher Jean-François 

Lyotard’s work, Discours, figure. She was the editor 

of the Beckett Circle, the international newsletter of 

the Samuel Beckett Society, and assistant editor of 

the French Review. 

As part of a Friends lecture last year on the 

relationship between literature and the visual arts, 

Lydon loaned a copy of Foirades/Fizzles for exhibit 

in the Department of Special Collections. The 

limited edition fine arts press book was a 

collaborative project between Samuel Beckett and 

Jasper Johns, the Pop art American painter and 

graphic artist. The copy loaned was a gift from 

Johns to Lydon. 

in Wisconsin and spent his formative years in 

Madison and Fox Lake. 

The collection promotes research and 

study of jazz of the ‘20s, ‘30s and ‘40s. The 

Hansens and the Bunny Berigan Foundation 

also hope to preserve the surviving 

materials documenting Berigan’s life, 

career, and musical accomplishments. 

The Hansens’ donation adds to Beriganrelated 

materials already in the library’s 

collections, including books, photographs, 

printed music, and recordings.

Six million books. 

As a single stack, these books would form a 

paper pillar more than 150 miles high, 

well into the altitude of John Glenn’s historic 

orbit. 

If laid flat, top to bottom, these books would 

reach more than 1000 miles, a highway from 

Madison to New Orleans jammed with three 

quarters of a trillion words —in more than 400 

separate languages—words spread across 1.5 

billion pages. 

Sitting at the end of those miles of books is 

Dard Hunter’s Papermaking by Hand in America, 

a masterpiece of printing. The six millionth 

book of the UW–Madison Libraries tells the 

story of early American hand papermaking, the 

craft that gave birth to an entire American 

industry. Papermaking was published in 1950 

by Mountain House Press in Chillocothe, Ohio, 

the same year ground was broken for the 

campus’s flagship Memorial Library. 

“It is a tour de force of handmade books — 

using handset type and specially designed 

ornaments printed on handmade paper. The 

process took a decade,” says Robin Rider, 

curator of the Department of Special Collections. 

“So much attention is devoted these days to 

electronic communications—obsessively so, 

that we chose to honor the enduring use of print 

on paper in our six millionth acquisition,” says 

Kenneth Frazier, director of the UW-Madison 

Libraries. 

The book also honors Wisconsin’s printing 

and papermaking traditions. It shows the basis 

on which all papermaking, including that in 

Wisconsin, was built. In fact, the paper on 

which it is printed is part of the book’s appeal, 

says Frazier. 

Each sheet of paper was handmade using 

methods identical to those employed by American 

papermakers in the seventeenth and eighteenth 

centuries. The book is printed on four types of 

papers, all different sizes, weights, textures, and 

colors, giving it a unique look and feel. 

Papermaking documents paper made in 

pioneer America by traditional hand process. It 

describes the history of the first paper mills in 

eighteen pioneer states, starting with the 

earliest mill in 1690, to 1811, six years before the 

introduction of the first papermaking machine 

in the nation. 

Dard Hunter spent a lifetime traveling all 

over the world to study papermaking. While 

surrounded by the original material he 

gathered, the writer composed hundreds of 

pages at the type case without the usual 

prepared manuscript—writing the text as he set 

the type by hand. 

Starting in 1937, Hunter’s son cut and cast a 

special typeface and numerous ornaments. The 

first use of the entire font was in Papermaking by 

Hand in America. 

Facsimiles of twenty-seven watermarks were 

recreated from the original American 

watermarks in private and public collections, 

using paper moulds specially woven to match 

the originals. The watermark process involves a 

pattern of wire woven in the screen of the paper 

mould. It is formed by displacing the pulp in 

the paper, which creates a silhouette. 

Only 210 copies of Papermaking by Hand In 

America were published; thirty were hors 

commerce (not for sale). UW-Madison’s copy is 

number twenty-five and is signed by the author. 

Hunter and his son printed thousands of sheets 

of paper one or two pages at a time on two 

handpresses. Each book has 330 folio pages. 

Papermaking also includes forty-three 

facsimiles of papermakers’ pictorial package 

labels dating from the first quarter of the 

nineteenth century. They are full-sized on paper 

that simulates the originals.

To get a sense of the book’s significance, one 

has to talk to a book artist. Tracy 

Honn, curator of the UW-Madison Libraries 

Silver Buckle Press, a working letterpress 

museum, remains in awe of Dard Hunter’s 

accomplishment. 

“You get a sense of his (Hunter’s) presence; 

it is not just a dry bibliographic work in the 

graphic arts. His personality shows through. 

What underlies all of that is passion. And his 

signature is a passionate claim to territory.” 

Hunter signed his name with a flourish that 

runs the entire bottom half of the last page in 

the book. Honn observes, “He deserved that.” 

Although a book artist, rather than a 

librarian, she seems to take a librarian’s delight 

in the content as well as the artistry. 

“What makes this really remarkable is that 

Dard Hunter is one of those early twentiethcentury 

scholars who codified information that 

had not been put together before. He was 

documenting and gathering original 

scholarship, not just assembling previously

cited or found work.” 

Corroborating Honn’s claims, a group of 

hand papermakers from around the world 

hold an annual conference. They refer to it 

informally as “The Dard.” 

Papermaking by Hand in America is a 

distinguished addition to our library collections 

in the history of the book and the Private Press 

Collection. Rider points out that the book fits 

well with Wisconsin’s strong papermaking and 

printing industries, and it also supports 

academic programs. The printmaking program 

in the Art Department has produced many of 

America’s innovative book artists including 

some of the country’s preeminent hand 

papermakers. 

The chosen volume also suits the university’s 

new program in the decorative arts for which 

the Chipstone Foundation provided an 

endowed professorship. Dard Hunter was a 

noted designer of stained glass windows, 

pottery, and furniture as well as books. His 

work is part of the American Arts and Crafts 

movement. 

The book is sizable, weighing in at a hefty 

fourteen pounds and measuring 12 inches by 

17 inches. It is 3 ¾ inches thick. The pages are 

bound in heavy bevelled boards, which are 

covered with a patterned paper composed of 

type ornaments. The book is protected in a cloth 

library case (shown supporting the book on this 

magazine’s cover). 

“It is a substantial, ‘thumpable’ book. It has 

the weight and substance befitting a landmark,” 

says Frazier. “Six million is a milestone. Not many 

public university libraries get to that number.” 

Another volume by Dard Hunter, Chinese 

Ceremonial Paper (Chillicothe, Ohio: The 

Mountain House Press, 1937), copy no. 116 of 

125, was given by Marjorie K. Johnson in honor 

of Mildred Howard Smith. This volume, containing 

many samples of Chinese paper, enriches the 

library’s holdings of Dard Hunter’s works.

before it gets analyzed. And to enjoy it fully, 

its medium should be one’s own breath. 

Robert Pinsky, the nation’s former poet 

laureate, feels strongly that poetry is a physical 

event, like a performance. 

“Poetry is vocal, involving breath and vocal 

chords. It is like loving a horse. You feed it, pet 

it, sit on it,” the poet says. 

Pinsky spoke to a crowd of 500 on behalf of 

celebrating the UW-Madison Libraries’ 

acquisition of its six millionth book. To 

appreciate poetry, he says, “The pleasure comes 

first, not the mechanics. It is like someone 

announcing ‘I made a sweater.’ How it was 

made is not important. The poet wants to hear it 

feels great. ‘I wore it to a party and everyone 

said I looked great’.” 

It is this infectious enthusiasm for experience 

that Pinsky conveyed to grade school children 

who came to the campus Helen C. White 

Library to share their favorite poems. His visit 

was cosponsored by the Friends and the 

Wisconsin Union Distinguished Lecture Series 

with funding from the Joyce Foundation, the 

Keller Family Foundation, and Associated 

Students of Madison. 

His writing has won awards from the 

Guggenheim Foundation, the National 

Endowment for the Arts, and the American 

Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. 

“I am not a great scholar. I observe American 

culture and focus on sound. I try to make my 

poems sound like what a great jazz player 

would do. If I could have played jazz with just a 

third of the talent of saxophonist Sonny Rollins, 

I would never have gotten into poetry.” 

Pinsky, poetry editor of the online journal 

Slate, contributes to PBS’s “The NewsHour with 

Jim Lehrer” and teaches in the graduate writing 

program at Boston University. His most recent 

book of poetry is Jersey Rain. During his tenure 

with the Library of Congress as the nation’s 

poet laureate, Pinsky launched a nationwide 

project called Americans’ Favorite Poems, 

which also led to an anthology by the same 

name. 

The growth of poetry is an epiphenomena, an 

art coming into its own, he says. “Magnetic 

poetry on file cabinets, rap, and performance all 

have value. If one has great taste in goat 

cheeses, that does not mean I want to ban 

Velveeta,” he adds. 

As a nation of immigrants and a society that 

celebrates heterogeneity, Americans “must 

create our own culture as we go along. I do not 

lament anything about this. To be a poet in a 

country still inventing its culture is exciting.” 

Emphasizing the universality of the 

Americans’ Favorite Poems project, he notes, “If 

you go to the people who empty the 

wastebaskets and sweep the floors here, you 

will find a poem. I guarantee it.” Poetry 

becomes a part of “improvising our 

peoplehood.” 

Pinsky describes many of the people and 

poems he has heard through the project. 

One man recited a poem his mother had taught 

him by heart; he had later recited it to her on her 

deathbed. One person wrote about a poem “that 

broke my heart and restored it.” 

Since the country is not bound by blood or by 

an ancient folk culture, it must be bound by 

shared memory. “Poetry is an ancient means of 

storing memory. Being a poet, you represent the 

organ of memory of the people.” 

That is perhaps the greatest challenge for the 

poet. “Like a library, the poet helps preserve 

memory. The poet’s job is to find what has not 

been remembered in poetry.” 

“It takes a visionary to find something new to 

remember.”

Lying among the aging papers, like the 

abandoned children they represent, are the 

oddly cut pieces of devotional cards—only 

halves or thirds—never wholes, and no 

matching pieces to complete the puzzle. These 

are the mementoes mothers kept for the children 

they could not. 

Early this century in Italy, when a woman 

could not keep the child she bore, she could 

leave it anonymously with a Catholic church. 

She could place her child in a semicircular 

turnstile in the church wall, turn the revolving 

window, and leave her child inside as a ward 

of the church. In the hope of a future reunion, a 

mother could cut a religious devotional card 

into two pieces, usually at multiple angles, 

keeping one piece and tucking the other in the 

baby’s blanket. If mother and child ever 

reunited, they could confirmed identities by 

matching the two oddly cut sections. 

These shards of micro history as William 

“Jack” Fry calls them are what has made the 

last forty years casting about the shops of Italy 

all worthwhile. The emeritus professor of 

physics recently gave the libraries more than 

26,000 documents on Italian history. He seems 

to know a bit of history attached to every piece. 

“He has an eye for things that are going to 

have research value,” says Ken Frazier, director 

of the UW–Madison Libraries. The Fry 

Collection has already provided the basis for a 

master’s thesis. 

The collection ranges from an Italian family 

archive of the late Middle Ages to increasingly 

rare twentieth century pamphlets circulating 

after World War II. Among the unusual finds is 

a book of anti-Nazi propaganda disguised as a 

piece of conventional literature believed to have 

been published in 1939 . A partisan dust jacket 

advertises the book as an edition of Collodi’s 

Adventures of Pinocchio. Yet, the book is actually 

Herman Rauschning’s Confidence di Hitler, an 

Italian-language version of the often translated 

Hitler Speaks: A Series of Political Conversations 

with Adolf Hitler and His Real Aims. 

Fry began to collect old books in 1957 while 

still a new faculty member at the UW–Madison, 

about the time he started his collaboration with

Italian colleagues at the universities of Padua 

and Milan. Fry made his first acquisition when 

he saw a man selling books and spotted 

something he thought would be nice to own. 

The man named a price. “I argued with him for 

half an hour and declared it was too much. I 

went back the next morning and argued some 

more. I paid $4.” Here started his love of 

collecting. 

“They were cheap; they were beautiful. And I 

had never seen centuries-old books before. I was 

so happy. As a child I had few books; I grew up 

in a rural community on a farm. The local 

school had no library. This was a new world for 

me. It was a discovery in many ways.” 

This joy of discovery accounts for the breadth 

of the collection. “It is the micro history that’s 

interesting,” he adds, “not the big things. The 

common life captured in letters, small town 

government, the bread baker and shoemaker.” 

Sometimes the occasion for the find is as 

fascinating as the find itself. In one 

astounding moment, Fry saved more than four 

centuries of local government papers that were 

being hauled to the dump with a forklift. 

Apparently city administrators were getting rid 

of the archive because they were building a new 

administration building. The material dated 

from as far back as 1570. 

“The place for such documents is here,” Fry 

says, “in a library where they can be preserved 

and used.” 

“The joy of serendipity . . . of discovery,” says 

Fry, “is a powerful force.”

the Writer and the Artist 

“Go ahead. Just read it.” 

In the gentle, encouraging tone of the 

consummate teacher, David Hayman, an 

internationally recognized James Joyce scholar 

at the UW–Madison, coaxes an intimidated 

reader to open Ulysses by James Joyce. The book, 

which began to appear in installments in 1918, 

is a colossal experiment at telling the events of a 

single day in Dublin through the perspectives 

of its main characters. This modern parallel to 

Homer’s Odyssey is considered one of the most 

important novels of the twentieth century. 

While observing a photo shoot of the Arion 

Press edition (1988), a gift from Hayman to the 

UW–Madison Libraries, Hayman counsels, 

“Pick it up and read. Don’t try to analyze.” 

Indeed, it is hard to believe that this was 

Hayman’s own experience with Joyce. As a 

recent college graduate, he asked a friend riding 

on a train what she was reading. The next day 

he bought a copy. It altered his life; in some 

respects it made Joyce his life. 

Interestingly, this was the experience that his 

friend the abstract expressionist Robert 

Motherwell had as well, as a 20-year-old 

reading it without knowing much at the time 

about Joyce or what the critics were saying. 

Hayman calls it a “virgin reading.” 

This edition of Ulysses, which Hayman 

describes as not simply illustrated, but 

illuminated by Motherwell, is only one of 175 

copies printed. Twenty-five were not for sale. It 

is the first illustrated Ulysses. “Matisse attempted 

to illustrate (Joyce’s) Ulysses,” explains Hayman, 

“but he ended up illustrating Homer. “ 

Of those twenty-five numbered in Roman 

numerals, Hayman received number II. It was a 

gift to Hayman by the publisher for being the 

supervising editor as well as interviewer of 

Motherwell. And it has now become Hayman’s 

gift to the UW–Madison. 

In addition to the early, almost parallel 

encounters with the book, that both Hayman 

and Motherwell shared, Hayman literally 

stumbled across the Arion Press exhibit and its 

publisher Andrew Hoyem at Navy Pier in 

Chicago after “a serendipitous little detour.” 

The two began a collaboration that introduced 

Hayman to Motherwell, leading not only to an 

intimate look into the life of an internationally 

known artist, but to a true friendship as well. 

Hayman discovered that Motherwell had only 

read Ulysses once. “The artist was embarrassed 

that he had not read the critics and by the fact 

that he never reread Ulysses.” That powerful first 

impression comes across in what Motherwell 

called an ‘illumination’ of Ulysses, notes 

Hayman. 

“It is rare to get an unmediated, fresh vision of 

the book. The book intimidates everybody, and 

no one needs to be.” 

Hayman’s interviews with Motherwell, which 

were planned for publication with Ulysses, were 

conducted during a three-day stay at the artist’s 

Provincetown, Massachusetts, estate in July 1988. 

Hayman and Motherwell continued to talk 

regularly on the phone through the following 

years. Their last communication was in June 

1991. Two days later Hayman received a call 

saying Motherwell had died. 

Hayman has many memories from those visits 

with Motherwell. He remembers distinctly the 

reaction to Hayman’s discovery of a picture that 

Motherwell thought he had lost. It was a waterstained 

sheet that looked like cardboard—heavy 

watercolor paper about 18 inches square. There 

were five or six designs on it that looked like 

stage sets. Motherwell was astonished. They 

were sketches of a proposed exhibit at the 

Guggenheim Museum in New York, an exhibit 

that became the trigger for the beginning of 

abstract expressionism. 

On another visit, Hayman asked to buy one of 

the sketches for the Ulysses project. Motherwell 

replied that Hayman would not be able to afford 

it, “but I will give you one.” 

The artist picked one out, wrapped it up, then 

picked up his famous sketch of Joyce and said he 

was giving that to Hayman as well. 

In a newspaper interview about his gift of the 

Arion Press book to the UW-Madison Libraries, 

Hayman notes the decision was easy. “I have 

looked at it often, and it should be where people 

can see it. And,” he adds with a chuckle, “my 

wife is a member of the Friends of the Libraries.”

Artists working with the form of the book 

are quite consciously attempting to solicit 

for their own endeavors the kind of 

attention ordinarily paid by readers to a 

text. The memory of reading infuses our 

manipulations of even the most drastically 

altered variants of the conventional book.

Artists’ books are a hybrid form. 

Artists make them for all kinds of 

reasons, and with different intentions. 

Artists’ books may be rich and fancy, or they 

may look as common as supermarket 

circulars. There is no one look about them. 

The simplest definition of artists’ books is: 

“books made by artists.” Though bordering 

on the tautological, this is a good working 

definition for a rich and complicated genre. 

One of the reasons discussions of artists’ 

books begin with efforts of definition is that 

they are a subset of a medium: the book. 

Paintings don’t exist outside of art, but 

books do. All paintings are made by artists 

(arguably of varying degrees of talent and 

professionalism; trained Indian 

elephants and schoolchildren 

notwithstanding). Defining what is 

meant by the term artist’s book is a 

necessary requirement for a form 

whose related (non-fine arts) 

members include TV Guides and the 

Bible. 

It’s important not to confuse 

artists’ books with art books, or 

books about artists (monographs, 

for instance). In the last several 

decades many artists have made 

books, and used the book form as 

a primary tool of expression. This 

movement into a relatively 

unexplored medium or genre

needed a new descriptor. Artists’ books is the 

result, and though its definition is not entirely 

fixed, it is the term most often used to describe 

recent or contemporary book productions by 

artists. 

Thinking of the artist as being responsible for 

both the text and the physical realization of 

that text as a book may be a helpful construct in 

understanding the field. The difference between 

an artist’s book and a book illustrated by an 

artist has to do with intentionality and degrees 

of control. The illustrator may be one of several 

subordinate collaborators who is responsible 

for one aspect of the book’s realization. In 

general, the book artist conceptually controls 

the whole publication. 

What is it about the book form that attracts 

artists? The book’s physical nature is one 

inducement. Structurally, the book is a gathering 

of bound, usually printed, pages. The properties 

of portability, sequence, and containment are of 

particular interest to visual artists. Other allures 

of the book form that have been exploited by 

artists have to do with function: readers invest 

books with authority; their use is known, and 

their presence is ubiquitous. 

The book artist Walter Hamady has said 

“The book as a structure is the Trojan Horse of 

art—it is not feared by average people.” Artists 

may use the book’s many characteristics 

invisibly—the final work may not look that 

different from an ordinary book, or exploit them 

more self-consciously—the finished book may 

intellectually slay the reader. 

Exhibits of books present a problem since all 

books are best experienced privately, through 

handling, and over time. The items on display 

in the current exhibit are like film stills: they 

give a fixed idea of a time-based medium. Books 

are experiential. The need to handle books at our 

own pace is essential for a fuller understanding 

of their meaning. As part of its mission the 

Kohler Art Library makes its artists’ book 

collection available to patrons for just this kind 

of in-depth, hands-on investigation. The spirit 

of the show is to give you a taste of what may be 

had at the Kohler. 

The Collection

“Artists’ Books: Highlights from the 

Kohler Art Library” is an 

opportunity to bring a remarkable 

collection to wide public 

attention. Considered one of the 

finest and largest repositories of its 

kind in the country, the Kohler’s 

collection includes a broad range 

of creative work from over 150 

presses and artists located around 

the world. 

The Kohler Art Library has been 

acquiring artists’ books since the 

early 1970s and there are now 

more than 650 titles in the 

collection. Not surprisingly, artists’ 

books by Wisconsin artists make 

up a strong component of the 

collection. 

The collection began under the 

inspiring leadership of former 

Kohler Art Library Director William 

C. Bunce who envisioned it as a 

teaching collection, a kind of 

hands-on laboratory for the book 

arts. This was about the time that 

Emeritus Professor Walter Hamady 

started teaching book arts in the 

Art Department. The growing 

collection of artists’ books began 

forming a body of information on 

typography, papermaking, 

graphics, and design that directly 

related to the book arts classes. As 

a visiting artist teaching, among 

other printmaking courses, 

bookmaking during this period, 

Claire Van Vliet would later 

establish a long-term relationship 

with the library; she signed many 

of the books purchased by the 

Kohler from her Janus Press.

resulted in an important educational 

tool that directly supports the 

teaching and research mission on 

campus. Because of the high 

quality of the collection and the 

hands-on approach promoted by 

the library, the books have been an 

unexpected source for discovery by 

students from institutions around 

the state. And exploration of the 

collection by the general public is 

greatly encouraged. 

A generous bequest recently 

created a named endowment to 

help insure the care and growth of 

the artists’ book collection at the 

UW–Madison. The Leonora G. 

Bernstein Artists’ Book Endowment 

has been established for the 

acquisition, support and promotion 

of artists’ books and related 

materials. Upcoming plans include 

efforts to promote and increase this 

endowment by providing an 

opportunity for those interested to 

donate additional gift funds and/or 

gifts-in-kind to the collection. 

Libraries play a critical role in the 

life of artists’ books and librarians 

have been among the vanguard in 

recognizing the importance of this 

genre. Their stewardship 

contributes significantly to our 

understanding of the form. On the 

horizon are exciting initiatives to 

expand uses of the collection 

such as the creation of digital 

projects and online exhibits, the 

acquisition of book arts archives, 

and the development of annual 

book arts programming.

Frank Horlbeck donates personal library 

Emeritus Professor Frank Horlbeck, a longtime 

member of the Friends board, has donated his 

personal library of more than 2,000 books on 

medieval art and architecture to the Kohler Art 

Library. Horlbeck was a faculty member in the 

UW-Madison Art History Department from 

September 1959 until May 1995. 

Many of the books relate to medieval art and 

architecture in Great Britain, with a focus on 

the art of illuminated manuscripts. In addition, 

the gift includes a substantial collection of 

booklets and brochures on monuments and 

historic buildings, both ecclesiastical and 

secular, located throughout Great Britain and 

other countries. This gift has also greatly 

increased the library’s resources in the 

decorative arts, a growing area of interest. 

A number of illuminated manuscript 

facsimiles make the collection a resource for 

book art scholars. Les Heures de Marguerite de 

Beaujeu, is a 1925 reproduction of a 

fourteenth-century book of hours, an example 

of devotional books widely popular in the later 

Middle Ages that were lavishly illustrated 

according to the tastes of the patron. 

“This book has a wonderful history of 

ownership or provenance,” says Lyn Korenic, 

head of the library. “It was given to Eric G. 

Millar (former keeper of manuscripts and 

Egerton Librarian of the British Museum) by the 

renowned manuscript and rare book collector 

Sir A. Chester Beatty. Later, Francis Wormald, 

the noted paleographer and historian of 

medieval painting and manuscript illumination, 

who also worked in the manuscript department 

of the British Museum, gave the book to 

Professor Horlbeck.”

John Neu, bibliographer for history of science and assistant professor in the history of science at the UW– 

Madison, retired in 2000. A library fund has been established in his honor to build upon the history of 

science library collections he helped to shape. The fund also honors Neu’s work over three decades as 

editor of the Isis Current Bibliography of the History of Science and his leadership in making that 

bibliography available online through the Research Libraries Information Network .

Leonard Baskin’s Irises, published by the Eremite Press 

in 1988, was presented by the Friends to the UW–Madison Libraries recently. The 

image above is one of seventeen etchings in the book. The signed copy is number 

four out of a run of only thirty-five. Although the Friends were focused on the 

milestone of six million books through their series of events called Celebrating 

Books, they were looking ahead. When presenting the volume, 

President Ann Nelson dubbed it “six million plus one.”
