<strong>Simpsonichthys</strong> <strong>inaequipinnatus</strong>, a <strong>new</strong> <strong>seasonal</strong> <strong>killifish</strong><br />

<strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> Tocantins River basin, Brazil<br />

(Cyprinodontiformes: Rivulidae)<br />

<strong>Simpsonichthys</strong> <strong>inaequipinnatus</strong>, <strong>new</strong> species, <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> Tocantins River basin, central Brazil, is described. It is considered<br />

closely related to S. semiocellatus <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> Araguaia River basin with which it shares two derived features:<br />

dorsal fin subtriangular in males, terminating as a single, long filament, and frontal squamation F-patterned. It<br />

differs <strong>from</strong> S. semiocellatus by possessing more dorsal-fin rays in males, longer dorsal-fin filament, more neuromasts<br />

in <strong>the</strong> infraorbital series, and by <strong>the</strong> absence of a black spot with blue margin on <strong>the</strong> anal fin in males.<br />

<strong>Simpsonichthys</strong> <strong>inaequipinnatus</strong>, sp. nov., da bacia do rio Tocantins, Brasil central, é descrita. Ela é considerada<br />

estreitamente aparentada a S. semiocellatus da bacia do rio Araguaia por ambas compartilharem duas características<br />

derivadas: nadadeira dorsal subtriangular em machos, terminando como um único filamento longo, e escamação<br />

frontal em padrão-F. A nova espécie difere de S. semiocellatus por possuir mais raios de nadadeira dorsal<br />

em machos, filamento da nadadeira dorsal mais longo, mais neuromastos na série infra-orbital, e pela ausência<br />

de uma mancha negra com margem azul na nadadeira anal de machos.<br />

Introduction<br />

Spectrolebias was first proposed as a monotypic<br />

genus, diagnosed by unique morphological features<br />

and considered to be <strong>the</strong> sister group to a<br />

cynolebiatine clade containing <strong>the</strong> genera <strong>Simpsonichthys</strong><br />

and Cynolebias (Costa & Nielsen, 1997).<br />

The only member of <strong>the</strong> genus, S. semiocellatus,<br />

was a slender miniature species with translucent<br />

body, long and pointed dorsal fin, and broad and<br />

rounded anal fin. However, after morphological<br />

phylogenetic studies involving many cynolebiatine<br />

taxa, S. semiocellatus was hypo<strong>the</strong>sized to be<br />

more closely related to some species placed in <strong>the</strong><br />

genus <strong>Simpsonichthys</strong> (Costa, 2003, 2006) than to<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r cynolebiatines. As a consequence, Spectrolebias<br />

was considered as a subgenus of <strong>Simpsonichthys</strong>,<br />

<strong>the</strong>n including five species: S. semiocellatus<br />

<strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> Araguaia River basin, Brazil,<br />

S. costai <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> Araguaia and Tocantins river<br />

basins, Brazil, S. reticulatus <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> Xingu River<br />

basin, Brazil, S. filamentosus <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> Madeira<br />

River basin of Bolivia, and S. chacoensis <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Paraguay River basin of Paraguay and Bolivia<br />

(Costa, 2006, 2007). A <strong>new</strong> species of Spectrolebias<br />

<strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> Tocantins River basin, sharing unique<br />

morphological characters with S. semiocellatus, is<br />

herein described.<br />
