Description

Originally from North America, introduced to the Padua Botanical Garden (Italy) in 1619. In the first year a rosette of basal leaves appears, in the second year a red-specked stem arises from the rosette of leaves.

Flowers

The 4-petalled flowers are borne on long spikes. The petals emit a phosphorescent light and are night-scented.

Leaves

Lanceolate leaf is lance-shaped: long and widest in the middle. Long, wider in the middle, pointed, alternate on the stem, 5-20 cm.

Capsule: tubular, tapering, 25-35 mm.

Whole plant.

Medical

Seeds: oil extracted from the seeds contains gamma-linoleic acid that assists in the production of hormone-like substances used for premenstrual and menopausal problems.
