Description

Between the bulbs are long twisted leaf-like bracts. The whole structure is initially wrapped in a whitish papery bract, remnants of this are often visible. It has two ways of propagating, through seeds and through aerial bulbs.

Dry pastures, hillsides.

Flowers

A tall stem carries this unusual round flowerhead, 2.5 cm: small reddish-purple aerial bulbs topped sometimes with a few white-pinkish-greenish flowers.

Leaves

Linear narrow blade leaf, like grass. Broadly linear, cylindrical, 2-4 leaves.

Fruits Seeds

Capsule: splits open on 2 or more seams.

Edible

The whole plant has a garlic flavour, containing sulphur compounds.

Medical

All Alliums contain iron and vitamins and are slightly antibiotic.
