A rapidly growing cultivar of the aspen with an ascending regular trunk. At first narrow, it later grows more pyramidal. The trunk is smooth and grey, the twigs yellowish-brown. The branches are dense. The upright branches can be slightly bent at the top. The broad ovoid to rounded leaves are dark green, somewhat lighter on the underside. It is usually broader than tall. Not sensitive to late night frost. Used for planting in verges, for rural areas and as a park tree. 'Tapiau' was selected from seedlings from the Tapiau district of the German federal state of Prussia. Breeding is vegetative. Winter hardiness zone: 4
