A lovely 3D shape game for your learners

This 3D shape game is an ideal resource to use in the classroom or at home, to familiarise your learners with the different 3D shapes, and the language used to describe them. There are three differentiated versions of the game included, so that the game can be played with learners of all abilities.

There are cards and a mat for each version of the game, and instructions are included which you could print out, or just refer to on your PC to save ink. This resource is available in a super-eco colour version too, which means that you'll save some ink when printing out lots of copies.

Once laminated, this game can be used again and again with each class that you teach. The middle, lower and higher ability versions will allow you to make sure everyone is working at a level that suits them, too. It's really easy to use, and could easily be played as a family game at home.

How does this 3D shape game work?

This 3D shape game can be played with two players. Each player has a reference mat with the shapes on it, and the cards are shuffled and placed face down. Each player chooses a card, and then the other player will ask 'yes' and 'no' questions about the shape, to try and guess which shape is on the other person's card.

The mats are different according to each ability level - the lower ability version features the name of each shape below the image, and the number of faces, vertices and edges each shape has. The middle ability version features the names of the shapes with the pictures, and the higher ability version features just the shapes. This is great to test learners' knowledge of the names, as well as considering their features.

This activity can be used as a way to end a lesson on shapes, as it's a fun way to test learners' understanding of what's been covered and make sure that their knowledge is in line with the CAPS curriculum aims. How is this 3D shape activity beneficial?

This activity is beneficial for learners in a number of ways - firstly, it tests learners' ability to use the correct language used in maths to describe the different properties of different shapes.

Secondly, it helps learners with the soft skills of social interaction - they'll also love the competition element. As learners progress, they could work through the different ability levels of the game until they're pros, and can name and describe the shapes without hints!
