Jonathan Rhys Myers claims he’s ‘allergic to alcohol’ as he admits shame at booze fuelled row with wife

JONATHAN Rhys-Meyers has claimed he is allergic to alcoholic as he opens up about his recent booze relapse.

He told Event Magazine: "I would be known as somebody who relapses with problem drinking, not alcoholism. I don’t suffer from alcoholism – I suffer from an allergy to alcohol every time I drink it."

"I actually don’t like the taste of alcohol," he added.

"When I drink, the consequences are so devastating that it is a problem, but I never need a drink. It’s not something I crave."

The actor also claimed that airports are a particularly triggering experience for him because he has to sit surrounded by alcohol.

But he insisted it wasn't an excuse, adding: "That is not an excuse, there's never an excuse for me to drink."

Jonathan also insisted that it was a minor blip after eight months of sobriety.

He added that he had a few drinks before getting off the plane and going to a meeting and getting sober again immediately.

Dad of one Jonathan also revealed that he didn't start drinking until the age of 26 and gave it up soon after, and only suffered from a number of small relapses through the years.

The actor also revealed that he was put in situations where he could have been sexually harassed as a young actor.

He said: "You get moments where you’ll be at a party or an audition and somebody would put their hands in certain places."

Jonathan added: "If anybody had put their hands on me, I’d have knocked them out."
