An ancient tree - an Entada phaseoloides located near Mao Ping village of Ma On Shan has been mutilated with branches chopped off, according to the environmental conservation organization, The Green Earth.

The green group said it sent officers to the site this morning and found nearly a dozen cuts on the tree, suspecting it was intentionally hacked up.

Entada phaseoloides is locally very rare in Hong Kong and has been included in the document, Rare and Precious Plants of Hong Kong.

The ancient tree was a local 'Instagram-worthy' location, given its dense climbing branches and huge, flattened, spiral trunk.

The green group condemned the perpetrators' shameful behavior for destroying such a precious plant - one of Hong Kong people's favorite country park landmarks.

The group also called on citizens to provide information regarding the incident and urged authorities to investigate.
