It grows to 80 cm tall and the same wide with long and slender green foliage, and brown flower heads in autumn. Elegia tectorum is commonly used for coastal planting, added to borders, maintained in a container, or used to accent structures or other plant forms. It is a great plant for modern and pool gardens, or for complementing modern architecture.

It typically grows to 80 cm tall and the same wide with foliage that is olive green, long and slender. It becomes adorned with interesting, brown flower heads in autumn. Cape Thatching Reed is an excellent choice for coastal and windy sites provided the soil is free draining.
