Cyperus helferi is one of the few plants in the Cyperaceae family that can live underwater. It was popularized in the aquarium world by the renowned Japanese aquascaper Takashi Amano, who utilized it extensively to create captivating aquatic landscapes.

This plant is native to Southeast Asia and is particularly prevalent in Thailand. It has the versatility to grow both submerged and emerged, typically along the banks of standing or slow-flowing waters.

Characteristics

  • Leaves: Cyperus helferi produces long, elegantly bending leaves that flow along the water column.
  • Growth Style: Although it is a rosette-type plant, it has a very small root system.
  • Propagation: Smaller plants often sprout at the base of healthy, well-established specimens.

Cyperus helferi - Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F)
  • pH Level: 5.5 to 7.5
  • Hardness: 4 to 12 dGH (soft to moderately hard water)
  • Lighting: Moderate to high
  • CO2 Addition: Beneficial but not mandatory
  • Nutrient Levels: Regular fertilization recommended, especially in high-light, CO2-enhanced setups

Note: Cyperus helferi is adaptable, but avoid sudden changes in water parameters. Gradual adjustments are recommended for changes in tank conditions. Regular water quality monitoring and consistent maintenance are crucial for the health of the plant.
