Plant of the week: Scabiosa 'Blue Jeans'

A cottage garden classic that flowers from July to September

What is it? A cottage garden classic that flowers from July to September, with flowers like lavender pincushions on wiry stems. It's a herbaceous perennial, which means it dies down in winter and grows back in spring – but make sure you protect young plants from slugs and snails.

Plant it with? Scabiosa will live in perfect harmony with silver foliage – try artemisia, lambs' ears and snow-in-summer (Cerastium tomentosum). Add pale pink and lilac penstemons, and gypsophila and astrantias to complete the chocolate box style.

And where? Full sun and fertile but well-drained soil (anything but acidic is fine) are vital. It's a fairly diminutive plant with a height of around 45cm so keep it close to the front of a border or in a container (just don't forget to keep it watered).

Any drawbacks? Wet and poor drainage in winter will do for this plant, so add a layer of grit around the plant in autumn.

What else does it do? They make wonderful cut flowers, either fresh or dried (for this, tie them in small bunches and hang upside down somewhere dry and airy). Don't cut too many, though, as bees and butterflies will flock to the nectar-rich blooms.

Buy it Order six plants for £12.99, or 12 for £14.99. All orders include free UK mainland p&p. Call 0330 333 6856, quoting ref GUA690. Or visit our Reader Offers page. Supplied as plug plants. Delivery from September.
