Notocactus leninghausii

Description:

The Notocactus leninghausii is indigenous to Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. It grows at elevations of 980 - 4,260 feet above sea level. This cactus is typically found growing on hilly grassland and on walls between cracks in rocks. It also takes refuge in the shade of larger plants in pine forests. Although this species is abundant where it occurs, numerous subpopulations have been completely destroyed.

The Notocactus leninghausii is a highly appreciated species for its spines that take on a beautiful, electrified glistening haze of completely harmless golden spines. Additionally, they are cultivated for the opportunity to view their stunning, silky yellow flowers. Flowers bloom numerous times annually. This species takes on a columnar form, but only reaches a mature height of 3'. It begins to branch with a clustering formation starting later on as it ages.

Frost Tolerant. Hardy down to approximately 15°F - 20°F. It is best to avoid any frost. If a cold snap is predicted, as with any cactus or succulent, cover the plant with a blanket or tarp. Do not forget to use a stick or pole to prop up the cover. Please do not harm your friend! During the summer months, the Notocactus leninghausii will thrive best in an outdoor environment where the temperature can rise to over 86°F. Utilize a well-draining soil with mineral compost that allows roots high breathability. To thrive, this cactus requires full sun (only avoid the strongest summer sun). When placed in darker environments, this species tends to become overly lush and potentially rot prone. Additionally, flowers will likely not form.

During the winter months, keep nearly entirely dry. During the wintertime, if the soil is too parched or too wet/cold for extended periods, root loss or rot can result. Growing season begins in March. Increase watering gradually until late May (at this point the plant should be in full growth). During the summer months, water regularly. Higher temperatures may facilitate the necessity for an increased watering schedule (as long as the cactus is actively growing). Reduce the watering schedule in late September to initiate a state of semi-dormancy. Once October comes, return back to the winter watering schedule.
