Syracuse, N.Y. -- A small earthquake centered just west of New York City rattled windows in Upstate New York just after 10:20 a.m. today.

Desks shook in a classroom in Syracuse. Central New York residents in Syracuse, Manlius, Cicero and Clay felt it. A sewing table rattled in Camillus; a couch waved back and forth in Pennellville. Computers shook at Upstate Medical Center. A chair rolled across the floor in Kirkville. Lights flickered in Liverpool.

Walls and windows rattled near Utica. Dogs barked in Poughkeepsie; dogs trembled in Oneida and Syracuse. Wall-mounted televisions in Canastota wobbled.

Some people felt multiple waves; others none. Residents at first ascribed the shaking to a sudden gust of wind, a washing machine on spin cycle, a large truck rumbling nearby. In Rome, one man said it sounded like an elephant running through the house.

It was noticeable but not very strong in Central New York, about 200 miles from the quake’s epicenter, which was 45 miles west of New York City.

Two Baldwinsville residents waiting for a plane at the Newark Airport said it was so strong they thought a plane had hit the terminal.

There have been no reports of injury or damage yet. The U.S. Geological Survey said a 4.8-magnitude earthquake generally doesn’t cause damage.

“It is large enough to be strongly felt, especially in the East, where earthquake shaking travels through the crust more efficiently than it does out West,” the agency said on X.

The quake was felt from Maine to Washington, D.C., the USGS said.

Gov. Kathy Hochul said in news conference today that there have been no reports of serious damage or life-threatening situations. State agencies are continuing to assess all major infrastructure for damage, she said.

Flights at John F. Kennedy and Newark airports are currently grounded as the safety of the air-traffic control towers are assessed, she said.

Hochul said that the White House has reached out to offer any aid the state needs. She said that the state will continue to track the possibility of aftershocks.

The USGS says there’s a 46% chance of an earthquake of 3 to 4 on the Richter scale happening in the next week, and a 16% chance of one of at least 4 magnitude.

Earthquakes of 3 or 4 are considered small.

The last earthquake of this magnitude felt in New York State was in 2011, Hochul said.

New York City officials sent a text alert to phones in the area advising people to stay inside, according to SIlive.com. The New York Police Department asked residents to call 911 only to report injuries or structural damage, according to the report. Mayor Eric Adams is holding a press conference at noon, according to the report.

The Richter scale measures the amount of energy released in an earthquake, which happens when tectonic plates below ground abruptly slip past each other.

The scale ranges from 1 to 10. That scale is logarithmic, so every step is 10 times more powerful than the last. For example, an earthquake measuring 6 on the scale is 10 times more powerful than one measuring 5.
