Starfish flower cactus originally come from Africa. Evolving to deal with a lack of pollinating insects in the desert/hot climates, the starfish flower specifically emits a stronger smell in search of the only pollinator who can stay alive in the same climate, the fly. Many species do not emit a smell so strong it is intolerable or so offensive the plant is not manageable for the average hobbyist. Stapelia Gigantea, perhaps due to its large size, can emit a strong enough smell that you might think twice about growing it in walkways.
