Bacon isn’t just for breakfast anymore.
It’s also for cupcakes…specifically salted caramel bacon cupcakes! Oh yes…I put bacon in a cupcake…I also put bacon grease in a cupcake and then I sprinkled more bacon on top of the cupcake.
Not just any bacon though… Farmland Applewood Smoked Bacon.
You guys! This bacon is to die for. It’s thick-cut, chewy, and crunchy and has incredible smoky flavor. My husband asked me where it was from because he loved it so much.
The best part of Farmland Applewood Smoked Bacon is it’s super fresh…farm to table fresh. It has no added hormones, artificial flavors or colors. It’s sweet, hand trimmed and smoked over real Applewood chips. You can truly taste that Applewood flavor. It’s delicious. It must be delicious because in the past, it has been named Cook’s Illustrated #1 Highly Recommended Bacon, #2 Best Bacon by Bon Appétit, and a Top 5 Bacon Known to Man by Men’s Health.
Farmland is serious about creating the freshest products from bacon, to sausage, to specialty cut ham and more. Since 1959, Farmland has worked with local farm families to ensure they bring high quality products from Midwestern farms right to your table. You can learn more about all of their products on their website – I highly suggest checking them out!
Local peeps – you can get Farmland Applewood Smoked Bacon at your local Jewel! Wahoo!
What I love most about this product is its versatility. I love getting creative in the kitchen and when Farmland asked that I created a recipe that was farm-to-table inspired, I said I have an idea…a cupcake.
Say whaaaat? You might think a cupcake can’t be “fresh.” Well…this cupcake used fresh eggs, fresh whole milk, fresh bacon and pure vanilla. I am a fan of buying local ingredients from the farmers market or from my local grocery store. There definitely is a difference in flavor when you purchase good, wholesome ingredients.
Soooo…this fresh, farm-to-table cupcake is really to die for! I jazzed up a traditional cupcake by adding some brown sugar to help give it a deeper flavor. Then I decided to add a little bacon grease to the cupcake batter…ya know…for fun. Then I decided to mix Farmland Applewood Smoked Bacon with caramel sauce and fill the cupcakes. OMG – the caramel seeps into the cupcakes making them extra ooey gooey, and the crunchy salty bacon is the perfect added crunch to this dessert.
I topped it off with a brown sugar frosting, a little more caramel and of course more BACON.
Can you even? You really don’t have to go to the big cities and pay $5 for a unique, fun and tasty cupcake anymore. Spend the afternoon making your own with fresh, local ingredients! It’s truly so much fun, and the best part? You get a dozen tasty cupcakes to share with friends and family!
And you get to munch on Farmland Applewood Smoked Bacon while doing it!

- 1½ cups all-purpose flour
- ¾ teaspoon baking powder
- ⅛ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, room temperature
- ½ cup light brown sugar
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs, room temperature
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ cup whole milk, room temperature
- 1 tablespoon bacon grease
- 4 slices Farmland Applewood Smoked Bacon, cooked
- Jar of caramel sauce
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
- ½ cup light brown sugar
- 3 cups confectioners' sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2-4 tablespoons milk
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line a cupcake pan with cupcake liners; set aside.
- Cook bacon to your liking - either in a pan over medium heat or in a 400-degree oven for 15-20 minutes on a rimmed bacon sheet lined with parchment paper. Once cooked, drain on paper towels. Save excess grease from pan.
- To make cupcakes, cream together butter and sugars. Add eggs and vanilla and mix, scraping down sides of bowl as necessary.
- Mix dry ingredients (flour, baking powder and salt) in a small bowl.
- With mixer on low-speed alternate adding dry ingredients and milk, starting and ending with dry ingredients - dry ingredients, milk, dry ingredients, milk then dry ingredients. Do not over-mix.
- Lastly, stir in bacon grease.
- Fill cupcake liners about half full and bake for 17 minutes. Let cool.
- While cupcakes are cooling prepare frosting by creaming together butter and brown sugar for 5 minutes or until brown sugar has dissolved. Add confectioners' sugar, vanilla and 2 tablespoons of milk and mix until smooth. If frosting seems too dry, add a little more milk.
- Next, chop up bacon and mix half of it it with half cup of the caramel sauce. Cut small holes in the center of each cupcake and fill with bacon caramel sauce.
- Lastly, pipe cupcakes with frosting and garnish with caramel sauce and the rest of the bacon bits.
