Devil firefish, red lionfish

Distribution: from the Persian Gulf, the Red Sea and Eastern Africa to Sumatra. Invasive in the Southern Mediterranean, especially in Cyprus, Greece, Tunisia, and Turkey (some Red Sea individuals entered the Mediterranean via the Suez Canal).

Nearly identical in appearance to Pterois volitans, found in the Pacific Ocean, and which became invasive in most of the Caribbean. Sometimes confused with Pterois antennata.
