Notes A pair of amphisbaena, commonly known as worm-lizards, from John Wilkes' Encyclopaedia Londinensis. Amphisbaena are so called because of the likeness of their tails to their heads, a feature that invited comparison to the ancient mythological Amphisbaena, a double-headed serpent described by Pliny the Elder in his Natural History.

J. Pass (fl. c. 1794-1829) was a British engraver.

Johann-Eberhard Ihle (1727-1814) was a German painter and a member of the Nuremberg Malerakademie.

Condition: Strong impression. Light vertical crease. Minor time toning, mainly to edges.
