Info

Periophthalmodon freycineti (Quoy & Gaimard, 1824)

Periophthalmodon freycineti is a large light brown mudskipper with numerous white spots on the sides, a white underside, a dark brown dorsal stripe often from the eye to the caudal peduncle, 5–6 brown saddle-like stripes in smaller individuals, and white margins on the dorsal fins.

The distribution extends from the Philippines through eastern Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and northern Queensland. Its habitat is tidal streams, mud banks and bays, where it preys on small fish, crabs, small invertebrates and insects. The species name "freycineti" honors the French explorer Louis de Freycinet (1779-1841), the leader of the expedition on which this species of scarfjumper was collected.

Periophthalmodon freycineti is a facultative air breather and uses this characteristic to actively shuttle back and forth between rock pools.
