Description

This is the so-called nodding lily named by Komarov many years ago from the far east of Russia in Ussuri, the land of the Siberian Tiger but growing as far south as N. Korea.

It is a lovely lily with deep sugar-pink flowers borne in loose spikes atop a stem from 30-65 cm tall. This is clothed with attractive narrow foliage which in abundance and appearance betrays its close relationship with the equally excellent Lilium pumilum.

This northern species is very hardy, having taken down to zone 5 in the USA and it probably takes worse than this in the wild. Ideal cultivation revolves around a very hums-rich soil. This can even be wet at times, but it should dry out a lot from this (or be frozen) in winter. It is lime-tolerant.

‘Head in sun, feet in shade’ is an ideal summation for growing this one. It is not a difficult plant to please – get it all right and you will be able to savour superb bright pink, highly fragrant flowers around July, depending on your climate.
