Description

Erythronium tuolumnense Spindlestone is a shorter, more compact and more floriferous, garden form of the western American E. tuolumnense, a native of wet meadows in Tuolumne county, California.

Originating as a very good form of E. tuolumnense in the nursery garden of Diana Aitchison in Northumberland, this was spotted by Jim Jermyn who was gifted a “generous piece” from which present stocks are raised. Named by Jim, as Spindlestone, he regarded it as very special. This form is said to have a shorter, more compact nature than the usual garden forms of tuolumnense but with a greater number of its bright yellow flowers on each stem. This combined with the paired, glossy, bright, apple-green leaves and robust nature of the species makes it very good.

This form appears to be totally sterile, however we have found this to also be the case for most of the plants of E. tuolumnense found in gardens, which in turn appear to originate from the original Dutch stocks. Only the “De Jager” form of John Walker and plants which we have raised from wild collected seed appear to set seed.

A strong grower that increases well but which also flowers reliably.
