An ancient looking, slow growing tree fern with one or several, thick, fibrous trunks which can reach 1.5 m (5 ft.) or rarely up to 3 m (10 ft.) tall. The light green, pinnate or bipinnate fronds reach a length of about 2 m (7 ft.). Its curious distribution spans southeastern Africa, eastern Australia, Tasmania and northernmost New Zealand, where it is found in forests and other moist situations. Todea spores are perishable and should be sown immediately on receipt. The plant is very easy in cultivation and will adapt well to most temperate climates that do not experience severe freezes.
