A well branched shrub or small tree with upright or spreading branches, pinnate leaves and masses of spectacular, bright yellow, bell-shaped flowers. Sophora longicarinata is native to lowland and montane forests overlying limestone on the South Island of New Zealand. It adapts well to cultivation in mild, temperate climates and resents both very high and very low temperatures.
