Discovered and described by Henk Beentje in southeastern Madagascar as recently as 1993, this palm caused a sensation in the palm world as being the only truly aquatic palm. Ravenea musicalis starts its life submerged in shallow, flowing water and eventually produces a thick, gray trunk topped by an open crown of lax, elegantly arching, pinnate leaves. It is know only from three rivers in southeastern Madagascar, the Vatomirindry, Ebakika and Belavenoka. Ravenea musicalis is a challenge to grow in "captivity", which starts with collecting the seeds that start germinating while still in the fruit and therefore will rot very soon after collection if left uncleaned. Even though plenty of seeds have been distributed during the 1990s, only a handful of plants remain in cultivation. Most have expired early on for unknown reasons.
