Exceptionally resistant to drought, wind, frost and snow, this moderately large, evergreen tree, related to legumes and native to central Chile grows in a variety of habitats from hot and dry to cool and moist and is found up to 2000 m in the mountains. In the past it was overexploited for its thick bark, which can be used as a soap substitute and for many medical applications, and which also makes it unpalatable to pests. A rugged ornamental with good horticultural potential, suitable for at least USDA Zones 8 and above.
