Immediately recognizable by its greatly swollen, smooth, waxy white stem, this palm is a most rewarding species to grow in the tropical or subtropical garden. Native to the Caribbean Island of Hispaniola, both in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, it is found on hillsides in dry, open scrubland. It is the tallest and most impressive of the Pseudophoenix and can reach a height of 25 m (82 ft.) Even young plants are extremely valuable, so if you want a retirement fund, plant a thousand of them now!
