A large spruce to 40 m (130 ft.) tall with a dense, broad, conical crown and bluish to grayish-green foliage. It is native to western central China between 2400 and 3600 m. Its wood is of good quality and mostly used for construction. In cultivation is is suitable for USDA hardiness Zones 5 to 7 and will withstand coastal exposure.
