A small perennial with narrow leaves, native to mountainous areas in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico between 1000 and 3600 m elevation. It flowers in late summer with masses of pretty, scarlet flowers that are irresistible especially to hummingbirds. It is easy to grow from seeds, hardy and best suited to dryish temperate climates in USDA Zones 4 to 9. In wetter regions it must have well drained ground. Mulch may be beneficial in cold climates.
