This stunningly beautiful palm from Vanuatu grows a moderately tall, slender, smooth trunk topped by a spreading crown of large, mostly undivided leaves that are silverly white below. The large fruits are covered in curious, warty skin. Originally described in 1928 as a species separate from the well-known Pelagodoxa henryana native to the Marquesas Islands, an excellent and detailed article by Don Hodel et al. in Palms Vol. 63(3) 2019 has reinstated Pelagodoxa mesocarpa as a valid name after it had long been assumed to represent a synonym of the former. Pelagodoxa mesocarpa can be identified by its longer, narrower leaf with an orange to tan midrib especially in younger plants, fruits to 7 cm in diameter that have a orangish, fragrant pulp and an ovoid seed that sinks in water. It is native to Vanuatu where it is thought to be extinct in the wild but persists around human habitations. It is critically endangered and the relies entirely on cultivation to survive.
