A dry deciduous, large succulent shrub or small tree to 6 m tall, native to desert and thornscrub areas in southwestern Angola and northern Namibia. The trunk is thick and swollen, with smooth, silvery bark. The spiny branches hold small leaves during the wet season and form a sparse crown. In contrast, the pinkish to white flowers appear during the dry season when the plant is leafless. A bizarre plant for cultivation in the drier tropics.
