This new species of Nolina has earned quite a reputation in collectors' circles as possibly the hardiest of all trunking Nolina. This is no desert plant, but, alongside Agave montana, native to misty pine-oak forests between 2400 and more than an astonishing 3200 m in the high reaches of the Sierra Madre Oriental in northeastern Mexico in Tamaulipas and Nuevo León, where the winters are wet and afford many freezing cold nights. Mature plants form a robust, usually solitary trunk, densely clothed in a large petticoat of dead leaves and topped by a beautifully rounded crown of spirally arranged, pale green, straplike leaves. Before its official description in 2010, it has been variously known as Nolina sp. 'La Siberica', Nolina 'La Sibirica', Nolina 'La Siberia' or 'Nolina siberica'.
