This stunning and very unusual palm from swampy areas in Central and northern South America south to Peru grows to elevations of 1200 m (4000 ft.). It produces a tall, slender trunk that is usually covered in old leaf bases. The leaves are simple or partially pinnate, stiff, erect, and huge -- to 8 m (26 ft.) long! In the Amazon, the leaves have been used as sails for small boats and still are the preferred palm for thatching, which is no wonder, as it only takes a few leaves to cover an entire house! Very large but lightweight seeds that float because nature distributes them by water.
