A pretty climber in the pumpkin family with rigid, palmate leaves and fragrant, white flowers followed by mottled green, spherical fruits. It produces a perennial, woody rootstock that puts out many slender, annual shoots that can reach to about 10 m long. It is found in a number of dry scrub and woodland habitats in tropical and southern Africa, including Madagascar and the Comores. It has a number of applications in traditional medicine and for religious purposes and makes a wonderful ornamental.
