A large shrub or small tree, rarely more than 8 m tall, with bluish, needle-like foliage and small, red, aromatic cones. Juniperus oxycedrus is native to the western Mediterranean region and makes a nice ornamental for temperate climates in USDA Zones 8 to 10. An aromatic oil can be extracted from the wood that is used medicinally and in manufacturing perfumes. Seeds need cold stratification for a few weeks after sowing.
