A member of the same genus as the morning glory vines and the sweet potato, this species grows into an attractive, soft and succulent-stemmed, dry deciduous, small tree to 9 m tall with pale bark and fragrant, attractive white flowers with a dark red throat that appear during the dry season when the tree is mostly leafless. It is native to seasonally dry scrublands, thickets and thorn forest in southern Mexico and Guatemala between 600 and 2000 m.
