A single plant survives of this species in the Curepipe Botanic Gardens in the rainy hills of the island of Mauritius. It is perhaps the last remaining plant of a wild population previously growing in this location along with some very tall, old Acanthophoenix rubra. The Hyophorbe amaricaulis is protected with a tall barbed wire fence and scaffolding from poachers and cyclones. Numerous efforts to propagate the plant have failed in the past until researchers at Kew Gardens have managed to at least raise a few seedlings in vitro in 2010.
