This spectacular ginger is sure to provoke comment. It is widespread in Borneo and produces leafy shoots to 3 m (10 ft.) tall from rhizomes often held above ground on stilt roots. The red flowers are borne in little vases formed by the reddish purple inflorescence bracts that fill with liquid like little fairy pools on picks. It is very strange indeed to see a colony of senggang blooming in the rainforest. The fruit of this species is absolutely delicious. It is a juicy berry that tastes like a very sweet tangerine or pineapple. Like other Hornstedtia, this plant has great potential as an ornamental, as a cut flower, for its fruit and as a spice. It appreciates a tropical climate and is as easy to grow as most gingers.
