A spectacular and litte known palm described only in 2001 from stunted rainforests on serpentine soils on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines at an elevation of around 600 m, where a small population persists along creeks and other wet areas. It is a small, solitary palm with a slender trunk to 1.5 m tall that holds an upright crown of stiffly erect, keeled leaves with an undivided, briefly bifid and distinctly plicate leafblade. In captivity, Heterospathe califrons is even more rare than in its natural habitat, but a few plants are cultivated in the Philippines that indicate that it adapts as readily to cultivation as other Heterospathe and grows in shade as well as in full sun, at least in the humid tropics.
