A small bromeliad native to the highlands of central Mexico, where it grows on rocky ground or on rocky outcrops in dry deciduous forest between 1800 and 2500 m. It forms a rosette of narrow, heavily armed, glossy to grayish green leaves that turn reddish in full sun. In cultivation it is easily grown in a wide range of warm temperate climates.
