A rare species originating in the coastal forest of southern Brazil between southeastern Bahia and Santa Catarina and growing at elevations to 1300 m (4300 ft.). It can reach up to 4 m (13 ft.) in height with leaves up to 80 cm (3 ft.) long, divided into few leaflets of unequal width or sometimes entirely undivided. Usually plants have a beautiful maroon emergent leaf. Geonoma elegans has in the pastz been sold as Geonoma gamiova and is suitable for cool temperate as well as tropical climates and will take light frosts without damage. It is one of the easiest Geonomas to grow.
