A deciduous, broad, spiny shrub rarely more than 5 m tall with small, oblong leaves that are grayish green above and silvery white below. The Flowers are small and yellow, followed by brownish orange, aromatic, edible fruits to 2 cm long. Elaeagnus angustifolia is originally native to central Asia but is now widespread in cultivation as a windbreak, erosion control especially on sandy soils, and an ornamental, partially for its uncanny resemblance to an olive tree. In Asia, the protein rich, sweet fruits are most popular dried.
