This very unusual climbing palm is widespread in rainforests between southern Mexico and South America, but still rare in cultivation. It has elegant, elliptical leaflets and slender canes that are used in Central America for weaving baskets. It is best suited to tropical and subtropical climates and is surprisingly hardy to cold and even to a few degrees of frost. Even though it looks quite similar, this palm is not related to the Rattan palms (Calamus), but to Bactris, Astrocaryum, and the like, and fortunately is much less spiny.
