Often called "giant dandelions" by aficionados, Dendroseris is a unique genus of shrubs or small trees in the Asteraceae family and thus related to the daisy and sunflower. Eleven species are known to exist, all of which are endemic to the tiny volcanic Juan Fernandez Archipelago off the coast of Chile in the Pacific. All of the species are considered extremely rare and endangered. Their precarious condition is attributable to introduced herbivores that prevent regeneration and cause serious habitat changes. Dendroseris pruinata is known only from Robinson Crusoe and Santa Clara Islands, where it is now only found clinging to steep, inaccessible, windswept cliffs at low elevations. The plants form multiple stems to about 3 m (10 ft.) tall, which are topped with rosette crowns of succulent, lanceolate, gray-green leaves and look somewhat similar to a trunking Aloe. It is a gorgeous ornamental with a unique flowering characteristic. Each stem is monocarpic and dies after producing a large, feathery inflorescence. Despite their absolute rarity, Dendroseris are as easy as lettuce to germinate and grow. They are adaptable and enjoy a variety of temperate and warm temperate climates in USDA Zones 9 and 10. To our knowledge, we have been the first and only ones to introduce this species commercially.
