Dendrosenecio elgonensis is endemic to Mt. Elgon in Kenya and Uganda in eastern Africa between 2700 and 4200 m, where it is the dominant plant species in humid grasslands and shrublands. It grows as a small, palmlike tree to about 7 m tall with a robust, sparsely branching trunk to 30 cm in diameter and topped by a dense crown of very large, entire leaves to 1 m long and 30 cm wide. Old, dry leaves remain on the trunk and form a dense skirt below the crown. The much branched inflorescence appears above the leaves and holds many yellow flowers. Dendrosenecio is sometimes described as a giant herb. Similar to the Fralejones (Espeletia sp.) of the high Andes in South America, however, it belongs to the Asteraceae or Compositae (sunflower) family and, like many in that family forms a proper, woody trunk. The extreme climate at 4000 m on Mt. Elgon is usually clear and cold in the mornings with intense sunshine, cloudy or foggy in the afternoons and clear and frosty at night. Daytime temperatures are usually only a few degrees above freezing. In cultivation, Mt. Elgon Giant Groundsel is rare and best suited to tropical high mountain or highly oceanic climates without extremes of heat or cold, such as Ireland, Brittanny, coastal northern California, Tasmania or southern New Zealand.
