A rare dwarf cycad from seasonally dry forests on sandy soils in the western part of Hainan Island off the southern coast of China. It is similar to C. hainanensis but can be distinguished by its small size--usually with only a short or often underground trunk--and its smaller seeds. The crown holds up to 60 moderately keeled, bright glossy green and finely pinnate leaves. While still relatively numerous in part of its range, it is increasingly threatened by habitat destruction. In cultivation it is virtually unknown.
