Coccothrinax gracilis is one of the smallest Coccothrinax, with a canelike trunk that can reach 10 m (33 ft.) tall and is densely clothed in robust, short fibers, topped by a wispy crown of circular, palmate leaves with very rigid, narrow segments that are silvery below. It is native to the island of Hispaniola and found in both Haiti and the Dominican Republic, where it thrives under hot and bright conditions in scrubland on heavily eroded limestone rock. It is also one of the most rare Coccothrinax, both in habitat as well as in cultivation, where it is best adapted to tropical and some warm temperate climates. It tolerates full coastal exposure and some drought.
